Want your specimen mounted in the most flattering position and held there safely without adhesives? Let us make a base with a surface that is precisely hand-carved to fit the bottom of your piece and supports (if necessary) that are custom fit to add extra support precisely where it is needed, without interfering with the aesthetics of the piece. Our milled bases display your treasured objects as professionally and securely as possible. There is nothing finer, this is the ultimate throne for any stone.

Logistics

To make a milled base for an object, we do need to have possession of the object throughout the process of making it. There are many ways we can arrange this, from shipping to us - to you dropping off or us picking up at: a mineral show, your location, or ours - or even having us bring our mobile workshop right to you to make bases on site! We are happy to discuss the options with you to find the best solution. Rest assured, your specimens will be handled and stored with great care. We make our living doing this, and the safety and security of your specimens is our number one priority. Wait time can vary from days to months depending on the number of pieces you have, the time of year, and our current workload. It's never too soon to reach out to us and begin planning, especially if you have any deadlines to meet.

Cost

While we are proud to provide not only the best quality, but also the best prices for milled bases anywhere, there is no denying that milled bases are costly compared to flat bases. While our competition relies on the quick but lesser results from simply 3D scanning and CNC machining a rough cavity with a loose fit and sloppy appearance, we make our bases by hand in order to truly get the best aesthetics and most secure fit possible. A single milled base typically averages 2-6 hours of actual hands-on work to complete to our high standards. This time varies so greatly because every piece is unique, with numerous factors to consider such as the object's size, shape, weight distribution, density, milling depth, surface texture, and more. For this reason, we typically charge for milled bases on a case-by-case basis rather than a flat rate, primarily depending on the amount of man-hours the base needs to complete for a given size. The prices generally go as follows, with smaller and/or simpler pieces towards the lower end and larger and/or more complex pieces towards the higher end of each range:

"Thumbnails to Miniatures"

(bases usually 2x2" or less)

$50 to 100 USD

"Small to Medium Cabinets"

(usually 2x3" to 3x4")

$100 to 175 USD

"Medium to Large Cabinets"

(usually 3x4" to 5x5")

$150 to 250 USD

"Museum Size"

(usually 5x5" and larger)

$200+ USD

These prices include everything: the appropriately sized clear or black 1" thick top-beveled acrylic base, custom carved to fit the specimen, plus any supports if necessary (acrylic pegs, blocks, wire armatures, or other props), and laser engraved text in your choice of color fill.

A more precise quote can be provided once we are able to see the piece(s) from multiple angles and know the position you would like it displayed in. We believe strongly in honest, fair pricing and the idea that happy, loyal clients who come back again and send their friends too is the best way to run a successful business. Bases that are easier to make are charged less, and more difficult bases require a higher cost, but we will always be open and fair.

Notes: the price tables above cover most cases for minerals and fossils. Unusual cases, thicker bases, different objects (art, collectibles, models, etc.), and special requests are quoted on an individual basis. Discounted pricing may be available for large orders, educational groups, and non-profits.
